"The Boy" *SPOLIER* Movie Review

http://e.movie.as/p/286527.jpg

The Boy, directed by William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside), is a story about a young lady who comes to England to take some time away from her life in the Montana. Greta Evans, played by Walking Dead star Lauren Cohan, accepts a job as a nannie for the Heelshire's and their son Brahms.

**SPOILER ALERT! DON'T READ PAST HERE IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM**

When she arrives at the home of the Heelshires, she soon discovers that the older couples son Brahms, is actually a doll. At first she plays it off as a joke, but the couple soon shows her how real Brahms is to them. They feed him, read to him, and even let him play music. The couple is going on some sort of vacation so Greta must take care of Brahms and there are some very strict rules that she must follow.

At first she forgets about the rules and almost forgets that Brahms is even there. But as the movie progresses, she realizes that the doll can move, even though she doesn't actually see him move. By now she has met grocery man Malcom, who is played by Rupert Evans (Hellboy). He's been making her feel more comfortable in the home and Greta soon proves to him that Brahms is actually moving.

After going into the attic, Greta finds some old family photos and sees Brahms as an actual boy. We find out that Brahms died when he was 8 years old and Malcolm soon tells her that a little girl that used to play with Brahms was found dead in the woods when they were children. Could have Brahms had something to do with it?

Earlier in the movie you find out that Greta left her home in Montana because of her ex boyfriend Cole. Cole somehow gets the address of the home, and Greta finds him in the house. He plans on taking her home, but she does not want to go with him. He spends the night on the couch, but finds a cryptic bloody message reading "Get Out"
above his head. He blames the message on the doll. He then proceeds to smash Brahms head on a chair. Huge mistake.

The room starts shaking and a mirror shatters, revealing an opening in the wall. As the group looks at the hole, Greta hears her name being called from inside the hole. Then an arm comes out from the opening, and out comes Brahms. He was never really dead after all.

Cole tries to be the hero and ends up getting his throat slashed by Brahms, using a piece of glass from the dolls face. Brahms then persues Greta and Malcolm, chasing them through paths on the inside of the walls of the house. They reach an opening but they both can't get through safely, so Malcolm tries to stop Brahms while Greta escapes. She makes it out but Malcolm got attack by Brahms. Malcolm survives. As she gets away from the house, Greta hears Brahms saying to come back. So she decides to go back in and confront him.

When she gets inside she plans to kill Brahms, so she treats him like a boy and says that he must go to bed. So she puts Brahms to bed but will not give him a kiss goodnight because that was his punishment. So when he grabs Greta and asks for a kiss again, she stabs him. He then pins her and picks her up against the wall. Her last effort was to stab him one more time in the chest. So she does it again and he finally falls, apparently dead on the floor. So Greta goes and finds Malcolm and they both leave the house for good.

But at the very end you see Brahms putting back together the doll that had been smashed. And the last shot is just a close up of the dolls face. A pretty creepy way to end the movie if you asked me.

Pros:
  • Lauren Cohan and Rupert Evans played each of their parts perfectly, showing great emotion throughout the entire movie.
  • The cinematography was beautiful. The shots of the mansion were shot perfectly, and even the the shots of the gate were set up really well.
  • The twist of Brahms being alive was unexpected and pretty terrifying.
  • Great use of practical effects.
Cons:
  • It took a little while before the movie started to pick up speed.
  • It didn't have as many jumps scares as I thought it would. Could have had a few more.

Now on a scale from A to F, I give "The Boy" a....... B+!

Overall I thought this movie really proved itself as a horror movie. It brought a lot of great characters together for a good story. The acting was very good by all of the cast members. Even though it wasn't the scariest movie ever, it still utilized scary aspects to keep you on the edge of your seat. When Brahms came out from the wall, that was actually pretty creepy because the actor played him perfectly.

Thank you for reading guys and come back anytime for more information on all that is horror movies!

  1. Detail-packed review, one piece of constructive criticism would be to direct readers not wanting to be spoiled to the Pros/Cons section. The positives and negatives you denote are informative without being revealing and would provide that portion of the audience with more content than just the introduction. The only spoiler I could see in the Pros/Cons is the point about Brahms being alive, maybe omit that? I don't want this comment to take away from the integrity of the blog just something for you to consider when writing (catering a little bit to those not wanting to be spoiled but who still want to read your work).
